Grafstrom studied painting at the Stockholm Academy and exhibited with the Society of Landscape Artists of North America in 1886. In 1893 he became professor of painting at Bethany College, Kansas. Grafstrom was one of the first impressionists to use a broad brush technique with a fine color sense.  In his later years, his work was limited to impressionistic renderings of his native Sweden and North America.
